Target Age Groups:
For the year 2010, all the levels of schools starting from Pre School Education College students (including MA or MS levels) will be able to register to “ICT Seagulls Circles”. We also invite “Challenged” teams to participate in. The State and Private schools will be assessed within the same platform.
Registration:
In order to take part in this project, project school leaders and also project leaders must apply personally to be a member school of KALBE-MER (Quality & Peace Education Center of Hayal Köksal). All the steps of the project (starting from the registration to the delivery) are conducted with the collaboration of the Center.
This is a voluntary project. Please do not force your teachers or/and students to take part in it. They must be volunteer. Another prerequisite is the physical conditions of the school. All the circle members including the teacher leaders should be technologically literate and have e-mail accounts.
This project does not provide any financial award, except from a Momentum and a Certificate. Gaining İmece (Collaboration) spirit and learning through the project are considered as the awards of the project.
Project Steps:
School Administration Level:
Project leaders_ leading teacher and the school principal_ apply to Hayal Köksal to show their interest and commitment to the project. The school becomes a member school after making the necessary calls and/or visits.
The school principal, leading teacher(s) and the Coordinator (Dr. Köksal) sign the protocol.
The school administration support and provide the project teams with the necessary permissions, technological equipment and place to conduct the project throughout the academic year.
Project Team level:
1. The ICT Seagulls Project is conducted through the “İmece Circles©/Students’ Quality Circles” system based upon the PDCA Mindset (Plan, Do, Check, Act).
2. Project topic, concerning ART is determined by all circle members including parents.
3. After the determination of the problem area, all the members conduct a deep “Literature Reviewing” through the Internet and the libraries in order to get the necessary info about the problem.
4. The road map of the project is drawn by means of using some quality tools. At this step, getting help and guidance from Dr. Köksal is compulsory. The strategic plan should be approved by her before the project journey starts. If the team starts the project before the approval, it is disqualified. For, that plan is the key factor for a healthy project process.
5. By using quality tools, the main and root causes of the problem are determined by the whole team. Then, tactics and strategies are identified. The questionnaire is prepared. Seminars and activities to solve problems related to “art & art education” are planned.
6. On the way of using necessary data collection tools, pre- and post-tests are applied; before, while and after the implementation. The rate of the success is measured.
7. All the steps and activities are shared with the community by using either a web page or a blog.
Evaluation of the Projects:
2010 ICT Seagulls Projects will be evaluated at three different steps:
1. Preliminary Step: The General coordinating body of the projects (Kalbe-Mer) will approve the projects at the final step just before starting their peer-assessment phase of the circles. The following criteria will be taken into consideration:
a). Obeying time restrictions (managing time).
b). Following the general rules of the project during the project steps.
c). Designing and sharing the outcomes of the project according to the rules.
d). Delivering the Project CD and web page address at a complete and timely manner.
2. Peer-Assessment Step: All the circles from different countries will assess the other projects (excluding theirs). There will be 30 points of 10 criteria and this grade will form the 60% of the whole grading (See the criteria below). Circle members are also expected to correspond with the other circles’ members living at different countries. The circles from the same schools cannot assess their school-mates.
3. Jury Assessment: The jury members will assess all the projects based on the same criteria mentioned above. It will constitute of the 40% of whole assessment. The artistic assessment will be done by the related experts. They will prepare the criteria concerning each area and inform the participants.
Our Judges: are the wellknown experts of academia, IT and Art.

World Quality Day
World Quality Day was introduced by the United Nations in 1990 to increase worldwide awareness of the important contribution that quality makes towards a nation's and an organisation's growth and prosperity.
The purpose
The purpose of World Quality Day is to promote awareness of quality around the world and to encourage individuals' and organisations' growth and prosperity.
In a global economy where success depends on quality, innovation and sustainability, World Quality Day is your chance to reinforce these as the foundations of your organisation and focus on the importance of quality.
Why quality?
The term quality is everywhere, in all aspects of life. For organisations, however, deploying quality approaches is a prerequisite for creating a sustainable business.

Remembering Ataturk
Turkish people pay tribute to the father of their modern republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, with nationwide memorial services on November 10th of every year. During the day, which marks the anniversary of Ataturk's death, the entire country stops all activities for two minutes at 9:05 a.m., the moment of his death. This includes all vehicular and pedestrian traffic as well.
The beginning of the silence is announced by blowing sirens, car horns, as well as train, ship and factory whistles. Flags are lowered to half-staff and the national anthem is played at ceremonies at schools, military bases, government offices, and factories. Programs on Ataturk's life and accomplishments are broadcast by the Turkish media all day long.
Ataturk, the founder and first president of the modern Republic of Turkey, was born in 1881 in Salonica, Greece, then a part of the Ottoman Empire. Ataturk was young when his father, Ali Riza, died. His mother, Zubeyde, had to leave Salonica and move to her brother's farm. Instead of school, Ataturk worked on the farm, and his mother worried about his lack of schooling. Eventually he returned to Salonica to attend middle school. He took the military school entrance exam in 1893 without telling his mother.
Once at the military school, Mustafa developed a special interest in mathmatics. He attempted problems well in advance of those taught in class. One day the teacher said to him, "look here. Your name is Mustafa, so is mine. We can't let things go on like this. There must be some distinction between us. I suggest you call yourself Mustafa Kemal from now on." He did; Kemal means "perfection."
Mustafa Kemal entered the military academy in 1899. He graduated from General Staff College as a captain in 1905 and was assigned to the 5th Army Corp in Syria. There he saw the disorganization of the army and civilian administration and realized that something had to be done to save the country. In 1909 when mutiny broke out in Istanbul, Mustafa Kemal was an army officer who helped suppress the reactionaries. That same year, the Italians attacked Libya, then a part of the Ottoman Empire. He began organizing the local people against the invaders.
Mustafa Kemal went from one battle to another. During World War I, the Ottomans joined the war on Germany's side, fighting against the British, French, Italians, and the Russians. Mustafa Kemal's defeat of the British armada at Gallipoli made him a hero. In 1915, he was in Diyarbakır and stemmed the Russian advance. In 1916, he was fighting in Southern Palestine.
Being on the losing side, the Ottoman armies were disarmed and disbanded. On May 15th, 1919, the Greeks landed at Izmir. Mustafa Kemal went to Samsun near the Black Sea on May 19th, 1919 and started the War of Independence. wherever he went, everybody--young and old, men and women, officers and civilians--followed him as the only savior of the country.
The Turkish Grand National Assembly opened April 23, 1920, under his chairmanship. A new army was formed to fight the occupying armies on all fronts. Three years of occupation finally ended and, with the Lausanne treaty giving full recognition to the new state, Mustafa Kemal proclaimed the modern Republic of Turkey and became its first president. Convinced that military victory was not sufficient, he felt the revolution had to be followed by profound economic, social, and cultural reforms.
During Ataturk's 15-year administration, the nation moved forward and embraced western standards. Ataturk set up schools in every village and town and changed the country's Arabic alphabet to Latin. He separated religious affairs from state affairs. Legal and modern reforms began. Women were granted equal rights with men. a completely new economic system was constructed and surnames (last names) were adopted.
In recognition for his efforts, Mustafa Kemal was given the surname "Ataturk" by the General Assembly, which means "father of the Turks." In the short span of his life, he achieved the rebirth of a nation. He died in Istanbul on November 10th, 1938, at 9:05 a.m. He was 57 years old.

Social Responsibility
This year, within the circles of the ICT Seagulls Projects, there again will be "Challenged students' Circles". In fact, I invite all the 'abled' team leaders to include one or two 'disabled' ones in their teams. Life is lovely if we hug all the people around us. Together we stand.
I invite all the countries to take part in the ICT Seagulls Projects. The main theme of 2010 is: "To train quality persons through art, music and literature! The obstacles in for of us and some affective solutions". In order to get more info, please visit: http://www.bilisimcimartilar.com/ . There is also an English part on the page.

ICT Skills: Essential for all Teachers and Teacher Trainees
Thursday, October 29, 2009
Today: 86. Anniversary of the Foundation of the Turkish Republic
He was born in the year 1881 in Thessaloniki, at that time, within the Ottoman Empire's borders at that time, in Greece at present . His full name was Mustafa Kemal and the Ataturk surname, meaning the father of Turks, was given to him by the Turkish people (1934 November 24th.) in accordance with the reforms he introduced to create a modern Turkish country.
His background was military, and he served in various posts in the Ottoman army. During the First World War , he was the colonel in charge of Infantry at Gallipoli in 1915 and it was his genious defense tactics that prevented the allied forces ( British, French, Anzacs - Australians and New Zealenders and Senegalese) from capturing the Dardanelles and eventually Bosphorus.
His success and fast growing reputation disturbed the capital and to keep him under control he was promoted to Pasha ( General ). When the War ended the armies of the allied forces occupied nearly all corners of the country including Istanbul. Sultan and many of the people saw a hopeful future in the acceptance of either the British or American mandate. Ataturk, however, had a very different vision. He left Istanbul in a small boat, namely Bandirma ( a nice model of the boat may be seen at the Ataturk Museum in Ataturk's Mausoleum, Ankara), going ashore at Samsun, a coastal town in the Black Sea, on the 19th. of May 1919 ( a date later to be presented by Ataturk to the Turkish Youth as the Turkish Youth Day), the day the War of Independence began. He wanted Independence.
First with skirmishes , in time with proper army troops, Ataturk and his army friends' armies started fighting the enemy. Ankara was chosen to be Ataturk's headquarter for its central location and the seeds of a new country were planted there. He and his friends wanted to replace the Monarchy with a Republic. The War of Independence took some three years and by the end of the year 1922, all of the invaders had left the country. The Ottoman Sultan fled in a British boat. The birth of a new nation had begun.
Ataturk's Revolutions
Political Revolutions:
The Sultanete was abolished in 1922, November 1st.The Republic was declared in 1923, October 29th.The Caliphship was abolished in 1924, March 3rd.
Social Reformations:
The hat as opposed to fez was introduced. (1925) The activities of religious sects were banned by law. ( 1925)Western calender was introduced. ( 1925)International numeric system was introduced. ( 1928)The Metric system was introduced. ( 1931)The nicknames and personal titles were abolished. ( 1934)Religious attire was prohibited in public ( 1934). According to this law, religious personalities, irrespective of the religious groups they belong were not to wear religious attire in public but only in their sanctuaries. The surname law.( 1934)The modern secular system of jurisprudence is instead of religious law is integrated.( 1926) The liberation of the women of Turkey by giving them political and social rights.a) Rights brought with medeni kanun ( 1926)b) Rights for women to be elected for the parliment
Educational and Cultural Reformations:
Unity in Education ( 1924 )Introduction and the acceptance of the Roman alphabeth. ( 1928 )The foundation of Turkish History InstitutionThe foundation of Turkish Language Institution
The Principles of Ataturk ( Kemalism):
The doctrines of Ataturk or Kemalism is a system of thought based on the facts of Turkey. It is shaped with the will of the Turkish nation through a long historical background. Above all, Kemalism is the introduction and the rendering of the rights to the nation. It is the expression of the national sovereignity. It is an attempt to reach the level of the modern civilizations, it is westernization, modernization. It requires to experience a modern social life, to establish a secular state, and to govern with a positive science mentality. The principles of Kemalism can be viewed in two groups: "The Basic Principles" and "The Complementary Principles".
The definition of the principles as Ataturk has expressed them:
The Basic Principles
RepublicanismNationalismPopularismEtatismSecularismRevolutionism
The Complementary Principles
National SovereignityNational IndependanceNational Unitiy and TogethernessPeace at home Peace abroadModernizationScientificism and RationalismHumanitarianism
Turkish youth!Your first duty is to project and preserve the Turkish independence and the Turkish Republic forever . This is the very foundation of your existence and your future. This foundation is your most precious treasure. In the future, too, there may be malovelent people at home and abroad, who wish to deprive you of this treasure. If some day you are compelled to defend your independence and your republic, you must not tarry to weigh the possibilities and circumstances of the situation before taking up your duty. These possibilities and circumstances may turn out to be extremely unfavorable. The enemies conspiring against your independence and your Republic may have behind them a victory unprecedented in the annals of the world. By violence and ruse, all the fortresses of your beloved fatherland may be captured, all its shipyards occupied, all its armies dispersed and every part of the country invaved. And sadder and graver than all these circumstances, those who hold power within the country may be in error, misguided and may even be traitors. Furthermore, they may identify their personal interests with the political designs of the invaders. The country may be impoverished, ruined and exhausted.
You, the youth of Turkey's future, even in such circumstances, it is your duty to save the Turkish independence and Republic. The strength you need is in your noble blood within your veins.

15th Annual Conference of HumanDHS
“Peace at Home, Peace in the World”in Istanbul, Türkiye
Host, Organizer and Convener: Hayal Köksal, Ph.D.
Where to stay in Istanbul:
Frame:
by Linda Hartling, 2004, Ph.D., Associate Director, Jean Baker Miller Training Institute, Wellesley College, Boston, USAIn our meetings we aim at creating a humiliation-free, collaborative learning environment characterized by mutual respect, mutual empathy, and openness to difference. The perspective of "appreciative enquiry" is a useful frame of our work. Our HumanDHS efforts are not just about the work we do together, but also about HOW WE WORK TOGETHER. At appropriate points during our meetings, for example at the end of each day, we take a moment to reflect on the practices observed that contributed to an appreciative/humiliation-free learning experience. It is important to emphasize that an appreciative approach is not about expecting people to agree. In fact, differences of opinion enrich the conversation and deepen people's understanding of ideas. Perhaps, this could be conceptualized as "waging good conflict" (Jean Baker Miller), which means practicing radical respect for differences and being open to a variety of perspectives and engaging others without contempt or rankism. As we have seen in many fields, contempt and rankism drain energy away from the important work that needs to be done. Most people only know "conflict" as a form of war within a win/lose frame. "Waging good conflict," on the other side, is about being empathic and respectful, making room for authenticity, creating clarity, and growth.
Hayal Köksal, Ph.D., Host, Organizer and Convener.
Hayal Köksal, Ph.D., is a Member of the HumanDHS Global Advisory Board, and the HumanDHS Education Team. Hayal Köksal is a teacher-trainer, researcher, and author. Dr. Köksal received her MA in English Language Teaching from Gaziantep University in 1992, and her Ph.D. in Educational Sciences in 1997 from the same institution.
Linda M. Hartling, Ph.D., is also a Member of the HumanDHS Global Advisory Board, HumanDHS Global Core Team, HumanDHS Global Coordinating Team, HumanDHS Research Team, and HumanDHS Education Team. She is furthermore a Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies (JHDHS).Dr. Linda Hartling is the Associate Director of the Jean Baker Miller Training Institute (JBMTI) at the Stone Center, which is part of the Wellesley Centers for Women at Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts. Boğaziçi Conferences with EREC and NYIT
I have had very productive and interesting days recently. After meeting with the Advisory Board members of the NGO for Physically disabled (http://www.bedd.org.tr/), we made a radio program with Mr. Ahmet Bağbekleyen, who is a disabled member of the above-mentioned NGO and a program-maker of Cem Radio. I have been impressed a lot with the power of his will.
On the other hand, I was invited as one of the keynote speakers of the Bogazici Educational Conferences which was held for the second time with the collaboration of the Education and Research Student Club of Bogazici University (EREC), New York Institute of Technology, University of North Florida and American School Couselor Association. It was very fruitful and we have improved new projects with an İmece spirit. We compared the couselor training programs in USA and in Turkey. We conducted 2 workshops concerning the educational problems of both countries. I would like to congratulate the president of EREC who was my ex-student, Abdullah, other EREC members and especially Olcay. It was a good meeting as a student club activity. It was fascinating to be able to collect such large number of participants on the very warm days of the Summer. Talks focused mainly on "Counseling" teachers, their training and also their working problems. 2 fruitful workshops and their outcomes will be formed as a paper soon by the speakers, I believe.
Prof.Dr. Carol A. Dahir, from the School of Education, New York Institute of Technology, along with her 10 student teachers and also Prof.Dr. Carolyn B. Stone from the University of North Florida-past president of the American School Counselor Association, conducted a workshop on their wonderful book; "Measure". Dear Assoc. Prof.Dr.Deniz Albayrak Kaymak from the Counseling Department of Boğaziçi University presented the curriculum of counseling departments in Turkey. I shared my experiences with a paper titled; "In Teacher Training; from theory to practice".
The temperatures will decrease from then on, I hope, and thus, we will be able to collect the necessary energy to work. Our main issues from then on will be:
1. Our world-wide known artist Ms. Su Yücel will come with us and she will open an Art Exhibition there with her 14 pieces of art. As you knmow, she is the granddaughter of Mr. Hasan Ali Yücel who was the father of Village Institutions. And those schools were opened with the instruction of Atatürk, but lasted only 10 years.
2. The International Award Ceremony ıf the 6th ICT Seagulls Competition will be hosted by CMS.
I believe very excited and fruitful days have been looking forward to meeting us. :) Our target number for the Turkish delegation is 30. Please call me. My cellular is: +90 532 373 84 87.
With love and peace...

Lecture, Ceremony & Concert
Yesterday was a wonderful day! First of all, our Village Institution graduate teacher_ Mr. Mehmet Sazak_ gave a lecture to my students at Boğaziçi University about his experiences at the Village Institution in 1940s. Later that very informative and fruitful talk, there was an historical ceremony at the Albert Long Hall of the University. The rector and two deans (Engineering and Educational faculties) presented two honorary doctorate titles to Prof.Dr.Türkan Saylan who is a great NGO leader, a medical professor devoted her life to combatting with Lepra and a wellkown Atatürk daughter. After the ceremony, the famous Turkish pianist Fazıl Say presented a small concert. It was excellent. I will write my blog from London from then on. Have a good time.
