Celebration of the Republic Day

The Republic Day of Turkey is one of the public holidays in Turkey, commemorating the proclamation of the republic in 1923. It lasts 35 hours, starting at 1:00 pm on October 28.

On 29 October 1923, Mustafa Kemal declared that Turkey would be a republic and renamed it as the Republic of Turkey. Turkey had effectively been a republic from April 23rd, 1920 (the establishment of Grand National Assembly of Turkey) but official recognition of this came only 3 years later.

On 29 October 1923, the new name of the nation and its status as a republic was declared. After that, a vote occurred in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and Ataturk was selected as the 1st president of the Republic of Turkey by unanimous vote.

Since then, every year on October 29th is celebrated as Republic Day in Turkey.

OUR GREAT LOSS: MYDEAREST MOTHER...

Dear All,We have lost my dearest mother, Necla Kepsüt Özışıklıoğlu, physically on 18th October, 2011. She had been my idol since my childhood. Her patience, her wonderful life philosophy and skills, her kind and helpful heart towards all the beings and her great sensitivity! It was such a huge sensitivity and empathy that  never putting herself  to the list of priority. Always collaborating and guiding as far as she could!
She had graduated from the "Sewing" Department of "Vocational High School of Balıkesir" in 1949 with honours degree and had been recommended by the administration to attend to the "Ankara Girls' Technical School High School". However, due to the circumstances she had not been able to attend there and instead she had to support her family through sewing. Her Engagement Ceremony Dress, her wedding dress, suits of her husband and all the dresses and coats of her children... She was a real artist. She used to spend her days and nights to work (to sew) for her lovelies. Her dream was to be a teacher, but she had seen that only her dreams until she passed away. Instead, she had guided us_my sister and I_ to be teachers. We are thankful and grateful to her also for that. We love our profession and try to be like her.
We  pray to Allah to grant our strength to bear this loss though no words can lessen the pain and grief we are undergoing. Yet, we are very well aware that this was the only solution to end the suffering of her. We pray, may the departed soul rest in peace.
It was great to have wonderful mails from my dosts everywhere. Thank you all. I wanted to share a few. Love and peace...
Hayal Köksal

My dearest dearest Dost, I am so sorry to hear about your immense loss.  Your Mum is indeed with the angels now.  You can rest assured that you were a good and faithful daughter to her, through all the difficulties.  You did all that you could, and more.  You loved your Mum deeply through her last moment on this earth.  I know how painful this is, Hayal.  My Mum suffered severe dementia and she went through a similar ending time, and I was with her until the very end.
WIth great love and hugs to you and my Brother,

Dear hayal
I'm really very very sorry to hear of the terrible loss. A mother place's place can never be replaced by anyone in the world except God. May you find the strength to go thru this difficult time with courage.
With condolences and prayers .
Rani Kakshapati, India

Dearest Hayal and Servet,
I am late in coming to put my "arms around you" and share in the grieving for the loss of your mother. I can only imagine the sadness.   Losing my mother is one the the things I know will hurt to the core and I know you must be feeling the same.  I was fortunate to meet your mother and experience her sweet spirit.  The songwriter Irving Berlin said: "The song is ended, but the melody lingers on."  What she has given to the people around her will live on.I send my prayers with her and to you.
With love and blessings,
Leslie Janoe, USA

Our deepest-felt condolences, dearest Hayal!
We are with you, profoundly and lovingly, in spirit, at the loss of your mother.
We look forward to the moment when we can sit together and listen to you sharing of what happened and of how you feel.
We hold your hand in spirit, we send you all our love, in deepest connection and love, wishing you and dear Servet all the strength you need in this difficult situation!
